The Artist

Daren Redman shares life through textiles:

What began as a desire to share warmth with family through creating quilts, reflective of the individual, has evolved into an experiential contemporary textile art form for Daren.

A story teller at heart, Daren discovered that her love of travel, and the desire to share these experiences with those around her and back home, became the seeds for her textile expressions. After all, fabric has a history of embodying stories, so what better way to share these mindful moments?

What I do:

I retell your story, my story, or the earth’s story in a contemporary textile art form. Whether you desire to experience one of these stories as art on your wall, or as a quilt to wrap yourself up in, I custom dye the material to embody these reflections. Or, if you have a photograph capturing the moment you want retold, I love using it as inspiration for designing the motif or the abstract composition.

How I do it:

Starting with stark white cotton or silk, I hand dye my fabric, searching to recreate the exact color and textures. Using my mind’s eye, I cut the pieces into the graphic image I seek to create. Each individual part is hand sewn in the process of composing the whole, then I fill it with the highest quality cotton or wool batting. Next, I begin the quilting process with a unique design, that compliments the pattern. Each section is moved in rhythmic motion, sometimes adding surface designs, sometimes thread painting. After more than dozens of hours, the final artwork is completed.

Why I do it:

I believe in sharing the stories and experiences of our lives. Every moment, every place, every adventure, and every person we interact with has the potential for influencing our society and local community. Sharing mindful discoveries, so they touch the hearts of the people around us, is inspiring and life changing. Art is an empowering voice in experiential change.
