Dyeing Silks at the North Rim

August 6, 2017 by Daren Redman

For the next 2 and half weeks I dyed silk at my artist cabin. I uploaded all of my inner canyon photos of my hike to my iPad 2 with a card reader. There were 998 after the 3 week residency and after Bryce and Zion National Parks.

I had shipped with FedEx, all of my dyes, chemicals, supplies and silk Radiance from Robert Kaufman Fabrics. A total of 92 yards.

My outdoor dye lab at the artist cabin at the Grand Canyon. I dyed 30 foot lengths in a low water emersion technique to match the geology.

There were 2 tables inside the cabin for artists. I put both of them outside the west facing kitchen window and put plastic over the plastic table to keep from dyeing the park’s table. The other was a metal cart with upper and lower shelves with wheels. These stayed outside the 3 weeks and were fine.

There were 2 pine trees which held my clothesline. The weather was perfect and my silks dried in 10 minutes (no humidity).
