1st Day of 3 day – Inner Canyon Hike to Photograph Geology

March 24, 2017 by Daren Redman

I will camp my first night at Cottonwood Campground on the North Kaibab Trail. To obtain permits to camp in the Canyon, I went on the GCNP website and followed the instructions to get 2 nights permits by fax 9 months in advance. It is better to get them a year out, but I did not know my dates of my residency until January. My hike was from September 25-27.

I stopped at the Cococino Overlook, took more pictures and then stopped to look over the Overlook. Glad I got over my fear of heights the week before.

Now I am starting to see red limestone.

The colors are starting to change from tans and creams to tans and reds. I took pictures of the Supai Tunnel on both sides and the sunlight changed the geology in my camera.

Notice the light at the end of the tunnel is blinding bright from the sun.

South side of Supai Tunnel with a ton of sunlight!! Warmth. It was about 55 degrees at the top of the trail and now I am guessing about 70 degrees.

I am now crossing the bridge over Roaring SpringsĀ and the next part of the trail I am a “wall hugger”. But nobody was on the trail to see me. Ha. It is a long way to the bottom. I love this trail and the Grand Canyon.
